Jumblatt: PSP alliance with March 14 was out of necessity, should be terminated
August 2, 2009

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt announced on Sunday at the opening of the PSP General Assembly at the Beaurivage Hotel that his alliance with the March 14 coalition had been out of necessity and should be terminated.

Jumblatt emphasized the need to reconsider forming a new alliance on a national level “to get rid of biases.”

“The 2009 parliamentary elections resulted in sectarian alliances that should be eliminated,” he said, adding that he is surprised by the majority’s claim that it won the elections.

The PSP leader also said that the majority’s campaign in the elections “rejected the opposition on sectarian, tribal and political levels.

Jumblatt emphasized his desire for the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to unearth the truth behind the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, without countries influencing its decisions and meddling with its results.

He expressed regret about meeting with neoconservatives in the US to protect the Cedar Revolution, describing the meeting as a “black point in the party’s white history.” He also added that it is “not PSP policy to meet with those who have spread chaos in the Middle East, however, our priority was the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.”

He also commented on Lebanese-Syrian relations, emphasizing the necessity of having good relations with Syria now that Syria’s mandate over Lebanon has ended.

Whoever is surprised is ...! Walid Jumblat is just practicing his favorite sport: Switching sides. The signs were there. The Republicans lost the elections, Obama opened on Iran and Syria. The principles of independence and sovereignty have to be shelved for now.

Bank on it! Weathercock's ominous move forecast impending bad times. Wise, breed oriented, and surrounded by March 8 strongholds, Jumblatt knows how to protect his Druze (Unlike the Maronites whom he deemed a "bad breed")

The fox outfoxed the rest...now, he & everybody know that he is without a doubt the KINGPIN of Lebanese Politics, he claimed the rewards from Arslan hard work during the May 7th 08 & beyond..Alliances in Political sense are made out of necessity & need for a certain period & no one is naive enough to think that such alliances are for ever, especially in a Country as Lebanon...Its laughable to call his Party the PSP, it more suitable to be called Junbolat Private Party & No question Asked Followers !!!..same is the split between Amal & Hizbo, but still & may continue to stay undercover, without a doubt between Amal/Aoun..Lebanese Politics !!

Mr. Jumblatt, in democracies, coalitions are countinuously made and disbanded. Usually, coalitions are based on an election platform, economic ideology, or political objectives. These stated objectives allow the coalition to work on common values until these objectives are met. Now that you want to terminate the coalition with March 14, have your objectives been met? Can ylou be so kind and share with US the NECESSITY?
