The National Unity bloc said that they would not approve proposed electoral redistricting until reforms in the new electoral law were properly worked out. The bloc said that it was critical that such reforms not be abandoned later on.
The bloc called on the parliament to reconsider the law’s original provisions, as stated in the Taif Agreement of 1991. They also said that the version of the law drafted by the National Commission for Electoral Law, should be reevaluated.
The bloc said that the agreements reached at Doha last May were not sacred, and do not supersede the Taif Agreement.
An electoral law that divides representation by caza would increase sectarian division and weaken the nation’s unity, the bloc said.
